Serena Williams, one of the most successful tennis players of all time, revealed in Instagram that she is investing in currency exchange.
Williams entered the social media platform last weekend to announce Serena Ventures, which was secretly founded in 2014, and has listed some of its investments, including Coinbase and start-ups, in areas such as fitness, clothing, food and health for women and the community.
Williams said in the role:
“In 2014, (I know I can keep a secret) I launched Serena Ventures with the mission of providing opportunities to founders across a range of industries.” Serena Ventures invests in companies that embrace diverse leadership, personal empowerment, creativity and opportunity.
Serena Ventures’ website states that the company’s portfolio includes over 30 companies with a total market cap of $ 12 billion. It is not clear how much its VC company invested in Coinbase or in which round (s).
According to Crunchbase, Coinbase saw investments totaling $ 546.6 million since its seed round in 2012. It mainly raised $ 300 million round E Series in October 2018, valuing the company at $ 8 billion.
Forbes notes that in 2018, Williams became the world’s highest carrying athlete for the third consecutive year, with earnings of about $ 18 million. She also has a line of clothes and accessories.
As an athlete, Williams has achieved a world record of 23 Grand Slam Singles titles in the open age. She also won 14 grand slam titles for couples alongside her Venus sister, and won four gold medals at the Olympics.
Perhaps the investment in Coinbase was not so surprising as Williams’s founder, Alexis Ohanian, was a primary supporter of the stock market through his initialized venture capital firm, Initialized Capital.
